Push the Button Mom

For the last year and a half I have noticed that Claire has these twitches that come and go and I've asked doctors about them, but they always wanted to see one before doing anything. Well I was finally able to get one on video and it turned out that she had her third febrile seizure shortly after so when we were in the hospital for that I showed the doctor her twitches. We weren't sure if they were related to each other so they referred us to a neurologist. After visiting with him he thought it would be a good idea to do a 36 hour EEG to see what was going with her. I knew it would be a long weekend so we planned our weekend visit at the hospital for my MEA break. My mom was coming to visit so I knew the extra help would be great.
The weekend started by checking in at Children's Hospital at 9:00 AM on Friday morning. The check in didn't go very smoothly so I was very anxious about the weekend, but once we got to our room I felt a little better. I was also 20 weeks pregnant and pretty emotional so thank goodness for the patient nurses at the hospital. The nurses informed me that most parents of 2 year olds leave the room when they place the monitors on, but I wasn't going to do that. They typically have to wrap the kids in a blanket and hold them still to place the monitors on, but Claire did so great that she just laid on the bed next to me and let them put them on her. They said she was the best 2 year old they had done. We were so proud of her. The monitors were attached to a little machine they put in a Dora backpack and then it was all hooked to a bigger machine in her room. Needless to say there were a lot of cords, but that didn't stop Claire from getting around. The backpack had a button attached to it and if any of us saw Claire twitch we were supposed to push the button. Of course she didn't twitch all day so I was a little worried that she wouldn't, but I knew we had more time there. After a long night of little sleep I was able to push the button once so I was feeling better about that. The next morning Claire was very tired from no nap the day before and very little sleep I had a good feeling she would twitch. She always twitches more when she is tired. The doctor wanted to see at least 3 twitches so after she twitched two more times he studied her results and informed us that her brain looks great and it is just something she has. He said she could outgrow them or she might just have them for her life. I was very pleased that it wasn't affecting her brain, but a little disappointed that she might have to live with it. The other good news was that we were able to leave a day early because the doctor got what he needed. The discharge was a little difficult because it took a while to get her monitors off, but we were just very glad to be going home. In the end I think it was more of party then a hospital visit for Claire. She loved visiting with the nurses, doctors, and other patients on the floor. She never ceases to amaze me with her social skills. She is definitely her dad. :)
